Stronger Mind, Stronger Game: 6 Game-changing Psychological Tools for Athletes

Athletes, whether professional or collegiate, face immense pressure during tough games and challenging moments. Managing stress effectively can be the difference between staying composed and letting the moment take over. As a psychologist, I often talk to athletes about practical ways to stay focused and resilient under pressure. If you find yourself struggling with this, know that help is available—whether through me or another qualified psychologist.

1) Breathwork: One of the most important things to recognize during a game is that some factors are within your control, while others simply aren’t. We call this intervention "controlling the controllables." This mindset shift allows athletes to focus on effort, attitude, and preparation. If you’re at the free-throw line, for example, you can’t control the crowd trying to distract you. What you can control is your breathing, your focus, and your shot technique.
That brings us to another key tool: breathwork and grounding techniques. Deep breathing is something I talk about all the time because it works. One simple method is 3-4-5 breathing: inhale through your nose for three seconds, hold for four, and exhale through your mouth for five. This, along with grounding techniques—like feeling the ball in your hands, focusing on your stance, or even noticing the sounds around you—helps you stay present. Athletes perform their best when they are fully engaged in the moment, rather than stressing about what just happened or what’s coming next.
2) Mental Reset to Recover from Mistakes: Now, let’s talk about the tough part—how to reset after a mistake. Mistakes happen; it’s part of the game. The ability to mentally reset is crucial. Many athletes use a phrase like "next play" or "move on," while others use a physical cue like clapping their hands or tapping their chest. These small rituals help signal to the brain that it’s time to let go and focus forward. You can’t go back and fix a missed shot or a bad pass, but you can control how you respond in the next moment.

3) Positive Self Talk: Positive self-talk plays a huge role in keeping your mindset strong. After a mistake, it’s easy to get stuck in negative thinking. Instead, replace those thoughts with affirmations like "I’ve trained for this," "Stay in the moment," or "I’ve got this." Reminding yourself that the game will be over in a set amount of time can also help put things into perspective—every moment isn’t make-or-break. Many athletes also find motivation in their connection to the team. A phrase like "The team has me, and I’ve got the team" can be grounding and reassuring.
4) Visualization: Visualization is another powerful technique. Many athletes mentally rehearse their plays before executing them—seeing themselves nailing the perfect shot, running the right route, or crossing the finish line. This mental practice helps build confidence and prepares the brain for success. If you can see it, you’re more likely to achieve it.
5) Stay connected: Staying connected to teammates is also key. Some of the greatest athletes aren’t just the ones making the big plays; they’re the ones who lift up their teammates after mistakes, offer encouragement, or share small moments of connection—whether through eye contact, a pat on the back, or an inside joke. Feeling that sense of camaraderie can make stressful moments more manageable.
6) Set Microgoals: Finally, breaking the game into micro-goals can help prevent overwhelm. Instead of thinking about the entire competition or the championship title, focus on one play, one possession, one defensive stop. A high school player I recently watched was told by their parent, "You’ve got 32 minutes to show what you’ve been working on all year." That kind of perspective helps keep you locked into the moment, rather than feeling weighed down by the enormity of the game ahead.
If you’re an athlete struggling with stress during games, these strategies can help. But if you’re finding it tough to manage on your own, seeking support from a psychologist—whether it’s me or someone else—is a sign of strength, not weakness. Mental skills are just as important as physical ones, and with the right tools, you can stay in control, even in the most high-pressure moments.
